Who it’s for: anyone who likes a paper list on the fridge, and wants the usual things already written down.

Who it isn’t for: two grown-ups shopping from their phones. A paper list can only be in one place, so a shared list on your phones keeps up better.

How to use it

  1. Print one a week and stick it on the fridge with a pen nearby. Anyone who finishes the milk checks the box.
  2. Write the rest on the blank lines under the section it belongs to. If you plan the week’s dinners first, their ingredients go on now.
  3. Look at the weekly ads before you go. Write the sale price next to anything that’s on sale, and grab the coupon for it. Here’s how to stack a coupon on a sale.
  4. Shop top to bottom. The sections run in a typical store order, so you shouldn’t have to double back.

The sections of a grocery store, in order

Most US grocery stores have the same main sections, even if the order changes a little. The sheet follows the common one: produce, bakery and deli near the front, meat, dairy and frozen along the walls, and the center aisles for cereal, pantry staples, sauces, snacks and drinks. Baby, health and beauty, paper goods and pet usually sit together at one end.

If your store is laid out differently, number the sections on the sheet in the order you walk. For a full table of what goes in each section, and how to split one list across two or three stores, see how to make a grocery list by store and aisle.

When the paper list stops working

A paper list works until two people shop, or the list is on the fridge and you’re in the store. That’s the gap Kithful fills: a shared list for the whole family that sorts itself the same way:

The sections are typical, not your store’s exact map. Neither the sheet nor the app knows your store’s aisle numbers.

Questions

What are the sections of a grocery store?

Most US grocery stores have produce, bakery, deli, meat and seafood, dairy and eggs, and frozen, plus center aisles for cereal, pantry staples, sauces, snacks and drinks. Baby, health and beauty, paper and household goods, and pet supplies are usually grouped together. The order changes a little from store to store.

What order should a grocery list be in?

The order you walk the store. This list follows a typical layout: produce first, then bakery and deli, meat, dairy and frozen, then the center aisles, then household goods. Number the sections differently if your store is set up another way.

Is this printable grocery list free?

Yes. Print it from this page or download the PDF. There’s no email or sign-up.

What paper size does it print on?

It’s sized for US Letter paper (8.5 by 11 inches). On A4 paper, choose “Fit to page” in your print settings.

Is there an app that sorts a grocery list by aisle?

Yes. Kithful sorts one shared family list by store and then by aisle, and shows this week’s sales from your stores on the things you buy. It’s on the free plan.
