Weekly family meal plan
How to make a weekly family meal plan
Look at the week’s calendar, use up what’s already in the fridge, pick 4 or 5 dinners (not 7), and turn them into one grocery list. Fifteen minutes on the weekend saves the 5 p.m. “what’s for dinner?” every night.
Who it’s for: families who want dinner decided before the week starts, without a complicated system.
Who it isn’t for: anyone following a medical or strict calorie diet. This is a planning routine, not nutrition advice.
Plan the week in 6 steps
- Start with the calendar. Practice until 7 on Tuesday? That’s a slow-cooker or leftovers night, not a new recipe. A shared family calendar makes this a glance.
- Use what you have first. Check the fridge for what needs eating this week and build a dinner or two around it.
- Pick 4 or 5 dinners, not 7. Leave room for leftovers, a busy night out, and the plan changing.
- Mix quick and slow. Two 20–30 minute meals for the busiest nights, one bigger cook that makes leftovers.
- Make one grocery list from all the recipes, cross off what you already have, and sort it by store and aisle.
- Write it where everyone can see it, so “what’s for dinner?” has an answer without you.
A sample week
| Night | Dinner | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Sheet Pan Chicken and Vegetables | One pan, mostly hands-off |
| Tuesday | Slow Cooker Pulled Pork | Starts in the morning for a late practice night |
| Wednesday | Leftover pulled pork as burrito bowls | Uses Tuesday’s extra |
| Thursday | One-Pot Spaghetti and Meat Sauce | One pot, kid-friendly |
| Friday | Chicken Tortilla Soup | Makes enough for weekend lunches |
| Weekend | Leftovers, takeout or something fun | Leaves room for plans |
Doing it in Kithful

Pick dinners from a recipe collection
Browse recipes by category (soups, skillets, bowls, pasta and more) and tap Add to week to put one on a day. Your own family recipes live alongside: type them in, or snap a photo of a recipe card or cookbook page.
One grocery list for the whole week
One tap turns every planned dinner into a single list. What you already have at home is left unchecked, things already on your list are marked, and an ingredient two recipes share shows once.
The list does the rest
Ingredients go on the shared shopping list as products (“apples”, not “6 apples, peeled”), sorted by aisle, with this week’s sales from your stores shown next to them.
Plans change
Move a dinner to another day in one tap, and tap any planned meal to see its recipe.
Use what’s in the fridge
Tap Cook on the Inventory screen, tick what you want to use up (or tap Surprise me), and Kithful suggests recipes built around it.
What it doesn’t do — honestly
No nutrition or calorie counts and no diet-specific plans.
It doesn’t plan the week for you. It suggests and makes the list; you pick the dinners.
No grocery delivery. The list is for your own trip.
