Grocery list by store

How to make a grocery list by store (and by aisle)

Keep one list for the whole family, split it by the store you’ll buy each thing at, and sort each store’s part in aisle order. You walk each store once, and nobody buys the milk twice.

Who it’s for: families who shop at two or more stores (a big grocery run, a discount store, a warehouse club) and want one list that sorts itself.

Who it isn’t for: one quick stop at one store. A plain list is fine.

The method (works on paper or in any notes app)

  1. One shared list. Everyone adds to the same place: the fridge, a shared note, an app. Two lists is how you end up with two jugs of milk. If you plan the week’s dinners first, their ingredients go on the same list.
  2. A heading per store. Under each item, decide where you’ll buy it: the cheap staples at the discount store, the rest at the main grocery store. Anything that doesn’t matter goes under “any store”.
  3. Aisle order inside each store. Group items by section in the order you walk the store, so you never double back.
  4. Check this week’s ads before you assign stores. A sale can move an item to a different store for one trip. A grocery list app with deals can do this check for you.

Doing it in Kithful

Kithful’s shared shopping list grouped by store, each with its logo: Dollar General open with a $5-off coupon at the top and the Starbucks deal that was picked, with its flyer photo.
One list, a section per store, coupons for that store on top.

Sorted by aisle on its own

Every item lands under a section with a plain-word heading (Produce, Dairy & Eggs, Pantry…). If one lands in the wrong place, move it once and Kithful remembers that item’s aisle from then on.

Put anything under any store

Tap Store on an item to put it under one of your stores, or type another. Items you don’t assign sit under “Any store”.

Sales pick the store for you

Kithful reads this week’s ads from the stores near you. When something on your list is on sale, tap that store’s deal and the item moves under that store with the sale price.

At the store

Open just that store’s section; the others fold away. Your coupons for that store show at the top, and there’s a rough total for the trip based on sale prices and what you usually pay.

Shared with the whole family

Every grown-up in the household logs in to the same list, and what one person checks off disappears for everyone.

What it doesn’t do — honestly

The store isn’t remembered for next time. Kithful remembers an item’s aisle, but you pick the store each time you add it.

Aisles are general, not your store’s exact map. The sections follow a typical layout; there are no store-specific aisle numbers.

Weekly ads are US-only and come from stores that publish a digital flyer.

Questions

How do I make a grocery list by store?

Keep one shared list, put a heading for each store you shop at, and move each item under the store you’ll buy it at. Inside each store, sort items by aisle so you walk the store once.

What are the categories on a grocery list?

A common set is Produce, Bakery, Deli, Meat & Seafood, Dairy & Eggs, Frozen, Breakfast & Cereal, Pantry, Condiments & Sauces, Snacks, Beverages, Baby, Health & Beauty, Paper & Household and Pet. Reorder them to match your store.

Is there an app that sorts a grocery list by store?

Yes. Kithful groups one shared list by store and sorts each store by aisle. Picking a store’s weekly sale for an item moves it under that store automatically.

Can a grocery list app sort by aisle?

Yes. Kithful sorts items into sections like Produce and Dairy & Eggs, and remembers it when you move an item to a different section.

Is it free?

Yes. Kithful’s shared list, store and aisle sorting, and weekly ads are on its free plan.
