Pantry inventory app

A pantry inventory app you don’t have to type into

Most pantry apps want you to enter every can by hand. Kithful reads your grocery receipt instead. It keeps a list of what’s in the house, estimates when each thing goes bad, and tells you what to use first.

Who it’s for: families who throw out food they forgot they had, or buy a third jar of the same thing.

Who it isn’t for: anyone who wants the exact printed date on every package, or a count that’s always right without ever tapping “used up”. Kithful knows what you bought and what you tell it you used. It can’t see inside the fridge.

How it works

  1. Snap the receipt. A photo, a screenshot or a PDF. Ordered online? Paste the order email. Kithful reads each line, spells out shorthand like “BNLS CHKN BRST”, and shows you the list to check before anything is saved.
  2. No receipt? Scan the barcode. A photo of one barcode, or of a few items on the counter, looks up what they are. You can always type an item too.
  3. It guesses the shelf life. Each item gets an estimate by type of food, from food-safety storage guidance: milk in the fridge, bread in the pantry, chicken in the freezer. Move it to the freezer and the estimate changes. Change any date you like; next time you buy it, Kithful remembers your choice.
  4. Tap “used up” or “tossed”. That keeps the list honest and adds up what you threw away, in dollars, month by month.
Kithful’s pantry: no waste this month, a search box, chicken thighs with 1 day left, baby spinach with 2 days left and on sale at Kroger, bananas and sourdough bread.
What’s in the house, how many days each thing has left, and a sale on something you buy.

What you get from it

Food about to turn, on the Today screen

Food that’s about to turn shows up on Today, next to the day’s calendar and to-dos, so the spinach gets eaten before it goes slimy.

What can I make with what we have?

Kithful ranks recipes by what’s already in the house and how little you’d need to buy, and tells you how many of the ingredients you have. It pairs well with planning a week of dinners.

“Do we have…?” from the store aisle

Search the pantry from your phone while you shop. Your partner sees the same list with their own login.

A shopping list that knows what you’re out of

When something runs out, or it’s about the time you usually rebuy it, it’s suggested for the shared list, sorted by store, with any match in this week’s sales at your stores.

Recall alerts that only fire on an exact match

If a food recall lists the exact barcode of something you scanned, Kithful tells you. It never guesses from a name, so an alert means it really is your product.

What it can’t do — honestly

The dates are estimates. They come from the type of food, not the stamp on the package. Reading printed dates is unreliable, so Kithful doesn’t pretend to. Trust your eyes and nose over the app.

It only knows what you tell it. If someone eats the last yogurt and nobody taps “used up”, the list still says you have one.

Receipts can be cryptic. Kithful works out most store shorthand, but some lines need a quick fix in the review before you save.

It’s a web app in early access. It runs in your phone’s browser and adds to the home screen; there’s no App Store version yet.

Questions

Is there an app that tracks what food I have at home?

Yes. Kithful keeps a pantry list from your grocery receipts, barcode photos or typed items, with roughly when each thing expires and what to use first. It’s on the free plan.

Does Kithful read expiration dates off the package?

No. It estimates shelf life from the type of food and where you keep it (fridge, freezer or pantry), using food-safety storage guidance. You can change any date, and it remembers your choice the next time you buy that item.

Do I have to type in everything I buy?

No. Snap the grocery receipt, upload the PDF, or paste an online order email, and Kithful turns it into a list you check before saving. Barcode photos cover things without a receipt.

Can my family share the pantry list?

Yes. Every grown-up in the household has their own login to the same pantry, shopping list and calendar.

Will Kithful tell me what to cook with what I have?

Yes. “What can I make?” ranks recipes by the ingredients already in your house and how few you’d need to buy.
